A Mid Life Crisis Pivot

I’ve been doing tech as a job for roughly 25 years. Over the course of my career, I’ve done a little bit of everything around building and launching digital assets. For the majority of that time, I was developing web applications for large corporations like Dell and TrueCar. I’ve also been the solo tech guy who had to wear multiple hats and “just figure it out.”

The one constant has been that I’ve always helped companies do business online. As I approach the milestone of 40 years on this planet (July 1st), I’ve done some reflecting on where I’ve been, and what I’d like to do going forward.

So here it is: I want to refocus on helping the small to mid-sized business owner. I want to give you the tools to free yourself from digital drudgery, so you can work on high value activities.

My “Why?”

I graduated college a few months after the tech bubble burst. The plan was to work for large companies for a few years, then launch a small business. To demonstrate how old I am, my original idea was an internet cafe, because a lot of people still didn’t have high speed access at home.

But instead, real life happened. And to be honest, it was just easier to work a stable, 9-5 job, and get that tech bro pay & perks. I’ve decided it’s time for something different.

Small business owners simply don’t have the time.

I’ve always admired the entrepreneurs & small business owners in my network. But until now, the technical help I could lend was pretty limited.

Here’s what I could do: I could tell them what to look for when trying to hire someone. Or I could point them to some online resources, and hope they figured it out for themselves.

Unfortunately, most small business can’t afford to hire the developers required for custom code. They also don’t have the background to distinguish the good from the bad.

Off the shelf tech solutions still require significant learning curves. There is a significant amount of information you have to learn just to pick a solution. Then you have to learn how to implement and configure it.

Small business owners simply don’t have the extra time to allocate, even if they wanted to learn the ever-growing list of technologies needed to compete in today’s market.
